The Nigerian Legislathieves
In every democratic setting, the parliamentary roles can never be understated in the process of developing the country and making it attain a lofty height. In short, the parliament is the major difference between a system of government headed by the juntas and the democratic system. The Legislature plays a significant role in maintaining the country’s status positively as a result of acting as a watchdog on other arms of government and emphatically the Executive, when it seems to trespass. The chamber has been an active player in the course of developing the first world countries practicing the democratic system of government, because absolute power is accorded to the Legislature in as much as two third majority is ascertained.
But the reverse is the case when the Legislative arm of government is spearheaded by corrupt minded individuals who know nothing about power play and international politics, but this could have been obscure if not for the bootlickers, puppets, stooges, and toadies that dominate the Nigerian National Assembly. It is no more news that our lawmakers have contributed immensely to the shameful condition we find ourselves today in Nigeria, but for reaffirmation purpose, our attention shall be drawn to some things.
Shouts have gained ground since the inception of this 8th National Assembly, as pundits, researchers, sages and the general citizens of Nigeria largely criticise and oppose the ways of the current Legislature, while some people refer to it as “Legislathieves“, Looting ground, others have seen it as a caricature and a grotesque or gross misrepresentation of a true parliament. The country is presented as a lawless state because the Legislature concerns itself with trivial issues that are unconnected with the development of the country, the present Legislature is filled with individuals who believe in self-aggrandisement, which is a misnomer of a true parliamentarian, the duty of a lawmaker is to strictly and absolutely represent the interest of his people, but conversely, our present parliamentarians are pre-occupied with their own self-interests, this assumes a Kakistocratic system of government, which will always result to mal-development as opined by Plato. Plato noted that the country is only safe under the rule of the few wisest individuals.
It is now explicit that our Parliamentarians are blatant ignorants who claim to be knowledgeable and wise, their styles of boot-licking and parasitism have clearly shown and affirm the above claim, it is abnormal for everyone to think in a single manner, except if certain factors trigger that, the abnormality of the 8th National Assembly of Nigeria is more explicitly revealed in the sense that all of them except very scanty individuals amongst them headed the same way in relation to the recent bills passed. In a way, this amounts to anomaly, which clearly shows that some factors resulted to this, the factors are well recognized by all, which is corruption and bribery. Most of the Lawmakers are bribed to follow the wishes of their paymaster in relation to national issues.
This is just, by the way, Nigerians have been frustrated that they now believe the military system of government even seems to be considerable to the citizens and effective than our own civilian government characterized by a caricature Legislature. Different stakeholders and academicians have given the best description of this 8th Senate, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described the Lawmakers as bunch of unarmed robbers, this is because of the enormous and gigantic salary and allowances they earn, despite the fact that about 70% of Nigerians live in abject poverty, our Senators drive expensive and exotic cars around the country. The senator that own the least car has about 10 different cars, However, we Nigerians have been blindfolded that we even praise these looters and unarmed robbers, but we mercilessly deal with small thieves around the streets. Prof Sagay also noted that “This Senate is by far the worst in Nigerian history. Nothing good has ever emanated from them, their grab for executive powers, confrontation with the President and Vice-President, their love of self-serving legislation and total insensitivity to the common interest of Nigeria is sensational and unprecedented”.
“The outcome of all this malevolence against Nigerians is that they will achieve nothing before they leave in 2019, and Nigerians will turn out in millions to clap them out of relevance.”
Recently, the legislators have been asked about how much they earn as salary, but the response was that it is a taboo to ask such a question, what is expected of an honest government is to be transparent at all costs to its citizens, this assumes that the Senators have skeletons in their cupboards for not disclosing their actual salary and some of the incessant allowances they receive, However, efforts have been made to disclose the salary and some of the worthless allowances our parliamentarians receive.
A Senator earns N36,000,000 monthly.
If this is divided into two, he collects N18,000,000 and the balance N18,000,000 can be used to employ 200 Nigerians Graduate who will earn N90,000 per month.
200 persons multiplied by 109 Senators = 21800 employees.
This means that 200 Nigerians graduate can live comfortably on half of a Senator’s monthly pay.
A member of the Federal House of Reps. earns N25,000,000 per month.
If this is divided into two, the ‘Honourable’ earns N12.5million per month. The balance N12.5million will employ 135 Nigerians who will earn N92,500 per month.
135 Nigerians Graduates multiplied by 360 Honourables in the Federal House of Reps. = 48600 employees.
135 Nigerians Graduates can comfortably live on half of a monthly income of just one Honourable member of Reps. This Administration can actually employ 70,400 Nigerians graduates who will earn N90,000 and N92,500 respectively just from the simple reduction of the monthly income of both Senators and Rep members.
Another information that exposes the huge funds received by our Senators has been revealed,
The details of the remuneration of an average Nigerian Senator is shown below;
* Basic Salary (B.S) – N2,484,245.50
* Hardship Allowance (50% of B.S) – N1,242,122.70
* Constituency Allowance (200% of B.S) – N4,968,509.00
* Newspapers Allowance (50% of B.S) – N1,242,122.70
* Wardrobe Allowance (25% of B.S) – N621,061.37
* Recess Allowance (10% of B.S) – N248,424.55
* Accommodation (200% of B.S) – N4,968,509.00
* Utilities (30% of B.S) – N828,081.83
* Domestic Staff (70% of B.S) – N1,863,184.12
* Entertainment (30% of B.S) – N828,081.83
* Personal Assistants (25% of B.S) – N621,061.12
* Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (75% of B.S) – N1,863,184.12
* Leave Allowance (10% of B.S) – N248,424.55
* Severance Gratuity (300% of B.S) – N7,452,736.50
* Car Allowance (400% of B.S) – N9,936,982.00
* TOTAL MONTHLY SALARY = N29,479,749.00 ($181,974.00)
* TOTAL YEARLY SALARY = N29,479,749.00 x 12 = N353,756,988.00.
Approximately $1 Million.
These Senators also get other benefits from heading Committees. Whereas, the average salary of Nigerian worker based on the national minimum wage is N18,000.00. So, the yearly salary is N18,000.00 x 12 = N216,000.00, Approximately $612.00
Keeping in mind that the yearly Salary of Nigerian Senator = N353,756,988.00, when compared, the proportion is:
N353,756,988.00/N216,000.00 = 1,638
It will take an average Nigerian worker 1,638 years to earn the yearly salary of a Nigerian Senator.
The above information shows that our Senators are the most paid in the world, not even the president of the country earns as they do, these unarmed robbers have different corruption charges with the EFCC but they refuse to show up, all because they will be defeated, this set of legislathieves raise issues that are of less concern to national development in the house, even their stupidity has been more revealed due to the fact that they can abandon their official duty to escort Senate president Bukola Saraki to CCT.
Most of the bills they passed are to satisfy their own selfish interest, it is laughable that our dull Senators can pass the bill to render the assent of the President to bills useless and meaningful, what is the meaning of the democratic system of government we are practicing then?, if a whole President could be rendered useless all in the name of self aggrandizement, where is the checks and balances to be exercised by all organs of government then?
Nevertheless, the power to render these Kakistocratic legislative system in Nigeria useless rests in our hands (citizens), in order to protect our future and prevent these lawmakers from killing our future and that of our generations. Recall has been designed in democracy, because the decision still rest with the people, after all, we voted them in to represent our interests, and they have failed woefully in this, in the same vein, we can disengage and sideline them all by recalling them, Democracy will always be the government of the people, but illiteracy and blindness have been the cog in the wheel of this movement. After exposing us to the worthless state of our lawmakers, a positive result should be expected in the coming day.
